Thirdly, Google Arts & Culture is saying that you use their brand without permission. All the more that plenty of Google Arts & Culture images are already available from Wikimedia Commons. It is what people do with Google Arts & Culture content which could be an issue, not dezoomify in itself. Secondly, although dezoomify is only a way to reach Google Arts & Culture's content, it is not making any use of this content and, in my view, is not violating the Google Arts & Culture Terms of Service.

They are not, and they do actually want me to shut down dezoomify, or at least the ability to download google arts and culture artworks from it. I asked for more details, initially hoping they may be after some actual copyrighted artworks that I would have uploaded by accident. Possible when this content has been removed.

Many of the high-resolution digitized artworks available on google arts and culture are from artists whose rights over the works have long expired, and are thus in the public domain. This protocol is substantially more complicated than most others, and I was very proud to implement it in dezoomify, but also in dezoomify-rs and gapdecoder. In 2019, with the help of other contributors, I figured out how the zoomable image protocol behind Google Arts and Culture worked. I have been maintaining dezoomify as a free and opensource software since, regularly improving it, adding support for new zoomable image formats, and answering questions from the ever larger user base. You can also see the size of the original and zoomed GIFs before downloading, as well as explore other GIF properties such as the number of frames and frame delays in the GIF information area.My name is Ophir, and I created the zoomable image downloader dezoomify several years ago, while I was still in high school. You can view and compare the input and output GIFs directly in the browser by turning on or off the GIF animation viewer. If you want to keep the pixel sharpness in the output GIF, then disable the option "Smooth Zoom". By default, the program averages the nearby pixels when the image is zoomed and the image gets a little bit blurry. For example, a 50% zoom reduces the frame size by half and a 25% zoom shrinks a GIF by a factor of four. This way you can get a smaller GIF than the original. As an extra feature, we also allow entering a zoom level that is less than 100%. The zoom level is set in percentage, where 100% is the original size of a GIF, 200% is a GIF twice as large, and 250% is a GIF that is 2.5 times larger. It increases the width and height of each frame (maintaining the aspect ratio) and returns the enlarged GIF. This is a browser-based program that zooms GIF animations.
